What is the difference between relative and absolute hyperlinks and why you should know.
An absolute hyperlink is the full website address or URL path to the target webpage. Absolute hyperlinks are mostly used to link to or visit a specific page on the web i.e they are used to link out of your website to another site. an example of this link is
http://www.cooloolabusiness.com/information-sites.htm
A Relative Hyperlink is commonly used to link internal pages within a website where the link code is set for the new page "relative" to the current page. The relative link is the path to the page from the current page. An example might be
<a href="../sites/portfolio.htm">Our Portfolio</a>
Why do you need to know the difference?
Yes because:
1. We believe that site structure is important to Google indexing and that certain site links should be set absolute while most should be relative.
2. Relative links are much quicker than absolute links to navigate withing your website.
3. Realtive links can reduce page filesize if there are a lot of links on a page.
4. Website updating is much simpler and quicker especially adding new pages and changing filenames in advanced website editors like Dreamweaver.
5. Using relative links makes it easy to preview and test your website on your PC before uploading it to the web server.
